    Background
Occupational fatalities caused by falls remain a serious public health problem throughout the United States. The U.S.
Department of Labor lists falls as one of the leading causes of traumatic occupational death, accounting for eight
percent of all occupational fatalities from trauma.
    Your Options
Before you can begin a fall protection program, you must identify the potential fall hazards in your workplace. Any
work tasks that require personnel to be exposed to fall hazard of four or more feet, requires some form of fall
protection.

Fall protection can be achieved by implementing either a Fall Restraint or a Fall Arrest system.

  • Fall Restraint forbids the worker from ever stepping/falling off the edge that is four or more feet in height.
Examples of this include; guardrail systems, harness/lanyards of such a length that they will not permit the
worker to get to the exposed edge.

  • Fall Arrest is needed if the worker will be exposed to a free fall of four or more feet. Fall arrest is typically
comprised of an anchorage point, harness, and lanyard. This is the least desirable solution in that it permits
the worker to be exposed to the free fall and requires that not only does the worker have the harness and
lanyard, but they have these items on correctly and attached to a proper anchorage point.
